Live: Rolo Tomassi, Trash Talk, Throats: Flapper & Firkin, Birmingham 19/04/10
#1
First of all I'd like to say a big hello to the people of M-T that remember me. Long time no post! I'd like to note my return with a live review of a gig I went to tonight. Now I've never been a huge fan of hardcore, and the main reason I went to this gig tonight was for my friend. But I have to say I had an amazing night. The show started just gone 8:00pm. The first band up were Throats (http://www.myspace.com/throatsofgold), a band from the UK. Now bare in mind that one, I had never really seen any of these bands, and two, the venue was a very small one. The band played a very hardcore influenced style of grindcore, with time signatures all over the place, heavy drums and intense guitars. To be honest they were decent, except for the fact that the songs lasted way too long for what they were. Considering many grindcore songs are typically anywhere between 30 seconds and 1 minute, these songs seemed to last for 6+ minutes. That, and the vocalists sounded like he was repeating the words "Murder, mur-derer, murder" for every single lyric in every single song. Rating: 4/10 The next band up were Trash Talk (http://www.myspace.com/trashtalkfu), a hardcore band from Los Angeles. This band blew me away! Not only there music, which was laced with slower paced sludge-y riffs, that switched to manic grind inspired hardcore at the flip of a switch, but also there live act, which was so intense! Now I'll admit I haven't been to too many live gigs, but even still, never have I seen or heard of a band that quite readily tells members of the audience to jump up on stage and pretty much fight with the lead vocalist to sing the lyrics of the song. And because of this I have massive respect for them. Rating: 7/10 The headliners of the show were Rolo Tomassi (http://www.myspace.com/rolotomassi), a UK band from Sheffield. I had heard of this band quite a bit before due to them being featured in Kerrang (a UK rock magazine) quite a bit, and had shrugged them off as mainstream rubbish. But seeing them live was quite frankly amazing. Now, from my experience on here, I remember pretty much everyone bumming off Genghis Tron. Now picture them with a female lead singer, some hardcore, mathcore, and progressive influences and you've pretty much got Rolo Tomassi. The live show itself was amazing. Watching Eva Spence (Female lead) throw herself around the stage in a sparkly dress growling a singing with each breakdown and melodic synth element was quite a sight. I suggest anyone with an open minded music taste check them out! Rating: 9/10 Overall: 8/10 Great show! Last edited by H3LL_F1R3; 04-19-2010 at 08:07 PM. |
